Building East Berlin: an urban history tour of former East Berlin

Beyond East Berlin’s reputation for being grey and boring is a colourful history of utopian visions and intriguing innovations which formed the backdrop to daily life in the socialist capital. Rising from the rubble of World War II, the old city centre became a showcase for the latest architectural ideas. This tour reveals a story of the city beyond what the history books tell, shedding a new light on both familiar landmarks and the more secluded corners of the city centre.

Starting at Weberwiese, the tour weaves its way through developments from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, before ending up at the Nikolaiviertel to see the curious twists things took in the 1980s. Along the way, you’ll see where the city’s rebellious youth used to gather, discover which building was used to encourage children to recycle glass bottles and learn some surprising facts about one of Berlin’s most iconic structures. You’ll have the opportunity to find out more about the realities of life in East Berlin and about the places where thousands of ordinary Berliners still live their lives today.
