Berlin's Historic Heart?: peeling back the layers of history in central Berlin
3 hours

The area between Alexanderplatz and the river Spree has been at the centre of multiple incarnations of Berlin's existence, from the 12th century village by the river to its socialist rebuilding as the centre of East Berlin.

This tour will wind its way through both the backstreets and main thoroughfares of Mitte, examining some of Berlin's oldest relics, passing through the curious 'old town' in the Nikolaiviertel and ending up at Gendarmenmarkt. It explores the recent past, uncovers traces of the city's medieval beginnings and its time as Prussian capital, and asks the question of what really counts as historic in an ever-changing city like Berlin.
